War and Prison: Guess Whose Coming Home

A memoir of survival, crime, and transformation by Minister Ari Sesu Merretazon. This is the story America needs to hear from the battlefield to the prison cell, and from the prison cell to the White House.

From the battlefield to redemption a true story that refuses to be silenced.

This memoir chronicles the harrowing journey of a Vietnam War combat infantryman whose life spiraled into darkness after returning home, culminating in one of the largest mail robberies in U.S. history. No Hollywood script. No borrowed narrative. This is what actually happened to a man who went to war for his country and came home to a country that wasn’t ready for him.

But behind bars, he found purpose. Defying every odd stacked against him, Ari Merretazon founded the first Incarcerated Veterans Assistance Organization ever recognized by the U.S. Veterans Administration an achievement that brought him to the White House, honored by President Jimmy Carter. This is a powerful, unflinching tale of trauma, justice, and the enduring fight for redemption.

He didn't just survive the story. He lived it, fought through it, and wrote it down so others could find their way.

Ari Merretazon is a decorated, honorably discharged Vietnam combat veteran, an ordained minister, and a lifelong advocate for justice and the welfare of veterans. His raw, unfiltered account of his service and its aftermath is preserved as Chapter 7 in the acclaimed Bloods: An Oral History of the Vietnam War by Black Veterans. He was the Technical Consultant for the motion picture Dead Presidents Larenz Tate played his character on screen.

While incarcerated, he founded the first Incarcerated Veterans Assistance Organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs honored at the White House by President Jimmy Carter. He later successfully sued the Philadelphia City Council, compelling the establishment of the city’s first Office of Veterans Affairs under Pennsylvania state law. Through lived experience and tireless activism, Ari Merretazon stands as a powerful voice for truth, redemption, and veteran empowerment.
